THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL went by quickly and I was kept busy figuring my classes, timetable and activities. Senior year couldn't be one big party, I knew I had to knuckle down and work hard to give myself the best opportunities for college. I had no idea what I wanted to study in college but Mom had been reiterating that teaching, particularly music teaching would be a good choice for me.

On the weekend it was Piper's tenth birthday so we had two days of celebrating, one a family lunch, the other a mermaid pool party with ten of Piper's friends. It meant I didn't get a chance to catch up with Damon, though he did text me once and I sent him a recording of the new and improved version of the song, which now included a bridge.

Disappointingly he had only replied with: Sounds good and made no suggestion that we get together to add the vocals. It made me wonder if he'd gotten bored with the whole songwriting collaboration. Maybe it had been a phase he was going through and now he was no longer interested. Maybe he didn't want to spend time with a high school kid, after all he did have college to prepare for.

I tried to make casual conversation with Dominique, trying to find out what was going on. She did say that he was only coaching tennis on the weekends now that school was back and that he'd been doing some work for their brother, though being a surgeon I couldn't imagine what that entailed. Maybe it was helping at his house with yard work. Already it felt like I was asking an excessive amount of questions so I didn't query further. I didn't want Dominique to get suspicious.
